ASTM A216 WCB Casting — Custom Carbon Steel Castings for Pressure Service
Leesh Holdings casts, heat-treats and machines WCB components to your drawings — valve bodies, pump housings, flanges and pressure-containing parts, delivered with full material certification.
What Is ASTM A216 WCB?
ASTM A216 WCB Casting is the short name for grade WCB of ASTM A216/A216M — cast carbon steel suitable for fusion welding and intended for valves, flanges, fittings and other pressure-containing parts. The “W” in the designation stands for weldable, and “CB” identifies carbon steel of grade B: a chemistry and property band chosen so foundries can pour complex shapes that fabricators weld into piping systems without exotic preheat or post-weld treatment.
For buyers, the practical meaning is simple — WCB combines castable complexity with predictable weldability, which is why the grade dominates valve, pump and flange procurement worldwide. It is also commonly cross-referenced with EN 1.0625 (GP280GH) and JIS SCW480: near-equivalents by strength and weldability, not automatic substitutions. Our engineers verify every conversion against the governing specification before production starts.
Chemical Composition & Mechanical Properties (Grade WCB)
Ladle-analysis limits per ASTM A216/A216M; the mechanical values below are the standard guarantees for WCB in the specified heat-treated condition.

Mechanical Property
Residual elements are limited per the standard; stricter customer limits are accepted against Customer Requirements.
International Grade Equivalents — JIS, EN, AS & GB
WCB is specified on projects worldwide, so enquiries often arrive under a local designation. The table below maps the usual cross-references against ASTM A216 WCB — near-equivalents by strength and weldability, not automatic substitutions.
| Standard | Region | Grade | Tensile Strength | Yield Strength | Elongation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A216/A216M | USA (reference) | WCB | 485–655 MPa | ≥ 250 MPa | ≥ 22% |
| JIS G5151 | Japan | SCW480 | ≥ 480 MPa | ≥ 275 MPa | ≥ 17% |
| EN 10213 | Europe | GP280GH (1.0625) | 480–640 MPa | ≥ 280 MPa | ≥ 20% |
| AS 2074 | Australia | L3A | ≥ 480 MPa | ≥ 250 MPa | ≥ 22% |
| GB/T 11352 | China | ZG270-500 | ≥ 500 MPa | ≥ 270 MPa | ≥ 18% |
Values are indicative guarantee bands for comparison only — chemistry limits, heat treatment and test requirements differ between standards, so our engineers verify every conversion against the governing specification before production. For valve work, China’s GB/T 12229 adopts the WCA/WCB/WCC designations directly; ZG270-500 is the nearest general-engineering cast steel.
Foundry Inside
Four stages of every WCB order, open for audit — from sand to signed certificate.
Where WCB Castings Are Used
- Gate, globe and check valve bodies, bonnets and wedges
- Pump casings, covers and bearing frames
- Flanges, fittings and compressor components
- Actuator frames, mounting yokes and gear housings
- General pressure-containing hardware for oil & gas, power generation, water works and process plants
Every WCB casting we ship is traceable from pour number to certificate, so ordering parties can audit the complete chain without leaving their desk.
Quality & Certification
Material test certificates are issued to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2. Non-destructive testing — visual, PT, MT, UT and RT — is performed to your acceptance criteria, with hydrostatic testing where the design requires it. Weld repair is carried out only under approved procedures and re-examined afterwards, and third-party inspection is welcome at any production stage. Dimensional reports, hardness checks and heat-treatment charts are archived with each order, so the full quality trail stays retrievable for years.
FAQ
What is the difference between grades WCB and WCC?
Both grades share the same 485–655 MPa tensile band, but WCC carries a higher minimum yield strength (275 MPa versus 250 MPa) and allows more manganese (1.20% versus 1.00%). If your piping class specifies WCC, we pour to that grade instead — the foundry process and quality controls are identical.
Is ASTM A216 WCB the same as ASTM A105?
They are companion materials, not equivalents: A105 is the forged bar/flange material, while WCB is the cast version used for bodies and housings, and piping classes pair the two so cast and forged components share pressure ratings. On international projects, EN 1.0625 (GP280GH) and JIS SCW480 are the usual cast-steel cross-references — mapped part by part, never assumed.
Can you produce WCB castings to our own specification?
Yes. Whether an enquiry starts from an ASTM A216 WCB Casting drawing or from a foreign equivalent, material is melted and accepted against Customer Requirements — your drawing, tolerances, supplementary tests and any additions you make to the standard take priority over the baseline.
What heat treatment and testing come with the casting?
Standard delivery is annealed, normalized or normalized and tempered, recorded with furnace charts. Mechanical test coupons, hydrostatic testing where required, and NDT to your acceptance criteria are bundled with certificates to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.
How do I get a quotation?
Email david.lee@leesh.cn with a drawing (PDF/STEP), the material grade, the governing standard and the inspection scope. We reply with a technical review and a firm quotation — the three points we settle first are casting weight, machining content and the test bundle.
